Panasonic announces 14-140mm firmware availability
Sony debuts back-lit CMOS sensors for cell phones
Sony has announced the world's first 1/2.8" 16MP Exmor-R back illuminated sensor for mobile phones. Offering the smallest unit pixel size of 1.12μm, it will also be incorporated into what is claimed to be the smallest and thinnest mobile phone lens module. The sensor is capable of recording full HD 1080p30 videos and offers continuous shooting speed of 15fps. The company has also announced a similar 1/3.2" 8.13Mp sensor with a corresponding 28mm lens module. Both start shipping from 2011.
Press Release:

Also announces industry's smallest and thinnest*1 lens module for mobile phones
October 7, 2010, Tokyo, Japan - Sony Corporation (hereafter, "Sony") today announced the commercialization of two new "Exmor R" back-illuminated CMOS image sensors with dramatically improved photographic performance including significantly high sensitivity and low noise. In addition, Sony will launch two new lens modules equipped with these image sensors, which also include the smallest and thinnest*1 model for mobile phones. This is also the first time that "Exmor R" is commercialized for the use in mobile phones.
"IMX081PQ" is world's first*1 type 1/2.8 back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which realizes 16.41 effective megapixel resolution, and adopts the industry's smallest*1 unit pixel size of 1.12μm. "IMX105PQ" is a type 1/3.2 back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which realizes 8.13 effective megapixel resolutions for higher sensitivity and adopts a unit pixel size of 1.4μm. By embedding these highly sensitive sensors into mobile phones, including those without camera flash, users can capture high quality photos and videos even in low light settings.
Furthermore, Sony will commercialize "IU081F" and "IU105F2" compact auto-focus lens modules which include the two new "Exmor R" back-illuminated CMOS image sensors. These down-sized modules are suitable and efficient for mobile phones with relatively limited space and are equipped with high performance lens which maximize the image sensors' respective performances. "IU081F" is the industry's smallest and thinnest*1auto-focus lens module (W10.5 X D10.5 X H7.9mm) and is equipped with the 16.41 effective megapixel*2 CMOS image sensor.
"IU105F2" adopts the 8.13 effective megapixel*1 CMOS image sensor, and belongs in the industry's smallest and thinnest*3 size class (W8.5 X D8.5 X H5.67mm). Through its proprietary fine pixel fabrication process technology, Sony will proactively continue the development of "Exmor R" which adopts the 1.12μm unit pixel size for mobile phones. Accordingly, Sony aims to address customer demand by providing appropriately small lens modules especially for smartphones with large displays and limited space for components.
About the realization of high resolution
"IMX081PQ" is world's first*1 type 1/2.8 back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which realizes 16.41 effective megapixel resolution, and adopts the industry's smallest*1 unit pixel size of 1.12μm achieved by the fine pixel fabrication process technology. In theory, when a unit pixel size is made smaller, there are also some issues such as color mixture among smaller unit pixels. Sony solved this problem by implementing a unique formation of photo diodes optimally designed for fine pixel structure to realize a CMOS image sensor with high resolution, high sensitivity and low noise.
About manufacturing
Since 2009, Sony has been mass producing "Exmor R" for Digital Still Cameras and Digital Video Camcorders on wafer lines (with diameter of 200mm) at Sony Semiconductor Kyushu Corporation's Nagasaki Technology Center. At the end of 2010, Sony plans to start the mass production of "Exmor R," including those for mobile phones announced today, at Sony Semiconductor Kyushu Corporation's Kumamoto Technology Center, on cutting-edge wafer lines (with diameter of 300mm). Sony already announced (September 1, 2010) the investment of approximately 40 billion yen in Kumamoto Technology Center to increase production capacity for CMOS image sensors.
About Back-illuminated CMOS image sensor "Exmor R"
Sony first announced the development of "Exmor R" on Jun, 2008. "Exmor R" has been incorporated in Sony's digital imaging products since 2009, and its use in other products has continued to expand. "Exmor R" CMOS image sensor features Sony's independently developed back-illuminated structure, realizing significantly higher sensitivity as well as lower noise. In this back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, light is directed onto the silicon substrate from behind, allowing light to be used with a level of efficiency not possible with conventional front-illuminated structures.

If Al-Qaeda intended to change the United States by their inhuman acts on September 11, 2001, they accomplished what they set out to do.? Americans took the bait and President Bush, Vice President Cheney and their cronies took advantage of our fears to begin to reshape America in their own vision.??? We went to war to wipe out the Taliban.? Then, before we could finish the job in Afghanistan, Iraq became more important. What could have been more important than totally vanquishing the government in power in Afghanistan, the one government that we know directly participated on September 11, 2001? Incredibly, the Taliban today controls sign cant portions of Afghanistan.
??? This Administration never told us we were voting for a war in Iraq if we were voted for Bush/Cheney.? Perhaps I missed the code words during the speeches and debates in the run up to the election.? It appears that one needs to be able to divine this Administration's code in order to understand its intentions.? A little like Bill Clinton's verbal linguistics but?far more dangerous and much more personal.? A good example is the code word "Coalition".? What that means to this Administration is mostly US and several other countries with most committing a minimal number of troops.? Watch Bush's lips move and listen for the code.? It happens all the time, now that he is President. I must admit I do not yet fully understand much of the code I hear.?
????We went to war on Iraq based on the Administrations' request, to us, and Congress, to trust their Intelligence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.? Rumsfeld even told us where they were located.? We are now told that since there were no weapons of mass destruction we were nevertheless justified in waging war because Saddam Hussein is a terrible person.? If that is a?justification for going to war, what about all those other really bad guys out there?
??? We were also told that Saddam Hussein was somehow involved in the September 11, 2001 terrorist acts.? Ooops, that was a mistake in Intelligence as well.
???? And the biggest failure of Intelligence lead to the Administration's biggest mistake, next to our entry into Iraq.? Because they thought our troops were going to be greeted by the Iraqis with flowers and candy instead of bullets, they massively underestimated the number of troops we needed to commit if we had any chance of a successful outcome.? Then, when it became clear that we could not provide security in Iraq, the Administration refused to admit?its mistake and thereafter refused to significantly raise the number of troops when they could have done the most good.? There was no backup plan.? If no flowers and candy, maybe we should have had a contingency plan to seal the Iraqi borders.?? Maybe we could have stockpiled armor in the event the flowers and candy turned to IED's.? Maybe we needed to have more troops in reserve, ready to win the war if things did not go as we were lead to believe?? In response to the question, "who could have known?" I spoke to many people in the lead up to the war that made these exact arguments.??
?????Who gained by this war?? Are there fewer deaths in Iraq now than there were in the years before the war?? What about the thousands of soldiers and the tens of thousands of civilians?? Is the typical Iraqi not living in the Green Zone better off today in their personal security, economically, in their freedom of religion and by most other measures?? I think not.? Are Americans any safer?? While there been no terrorist attacks in America since the September 1, 2001 attacks, the war has nevertheless cost the lives of a similar number of Americans as did the airliner attacks.? And the financial cost to our kids and grandchildren?? What about our standing in the world?? ???????So who did benefit from this unjustified war?? The only clear beneficiaries are a few multi-national corporations, like the Kuwaiti firm that is building the massive American embassy in Baghdad and Dick Cheney's old pals at Halliburton.? I make no claim that this result was the aim of the Administration.? It is sad enough to report the results of this Administration's actions.?
?????And when we discover that our Intelligence was faulty, and it is revealed, the Administration retaliates by leaking the name of a CIA agent.? This is the very Administration that complains about leaks and the irresponsibility of the press revealing the governments' actions.
???? Our citizens discovered that the NSA was conducting communication intercepts through the press.?? The Secret Court pushed for by the Administration was never consulted.?? While this Secret Court does not sound particularly American, we clearly need to take some secret action to fight terrorism.? Apparently, the Administration did not trust that these intercepts would be found legal by its' Secret Court so it did not try to secure warrants for these intercepts. The President's lawyer who gave the stamp of approval to this program then is promoted to Attorney General.? That is the head of the Agency that, in normal times would investigate the legality of the program.
?????The Administration refused to grant their own Justice Department attorneys security clearances in order to investigate the Justice Departments' lawyers role in these communication intercepts.? Therefore the investigation was closed by the Administrations' Justice Department.? Is that how our system is set up to work?? Where are the oversight and the balance of powers contemplated by the Constitution?
?????We are continuing to incarcerate suspected terrorists in Cuba so that they can be far from American justice.? They are subjected to what has been described as "coercive" measures to get them to reveal information.? When questioned,?the Administration justified Guantanamo Bay and practices such as water boarding as necessities and legal during war.? If necessary, and lawful why did we have to carry out those practices in Cuba?? Now, many of those "terrorists" have been released after years in custody and more will be freed soon.? Many because they were innocent.? After more than four years of detention and "persuasive interrogation".? A few of these "high security" detainees were just children.? Would that have been allowed if they were jailed in America and subject to the scrutiny of the Courts?? I hope not. And what about those high level terrorists captured over the past four years?? Why are they not brought to the United States?? Why are we hiding them in other countries?? This is America and I did not think that we did things that way.?
???? An American is arrested in the United States.? He is held without access to the Courts or even an attorney for years as an "enemy combatant".? When a challenge to that status is like to be upheld by the Supreme Court the Administration finally charges him with a crime to remove that issue from being decided by the Court.
??? Now we learn that most of our telephone records have been mined by the NSA.? Again, this was revealed by the press.? Again too, the Secret Court was not consulted for fear that the massive spying on Americans would not have been deemed legal.
???? Is this Administration telling us that in this war on terrorism, the American Courts cannot be trusted?
?????The head of the NSA at the time, these determinations were made and carried out, a general, is made head the civilian CIA. ?The first general to head the CIA in over 25 years.
?????The Administration defends some of these actions by the fact that there have been no terrorist incidents since September 11, 2001. Don't tell the American public that avoiding the scrutiny of the Secret Court prevented terrorist acts.? Even though it would not justify the Administration's failure to attempt to secure warrants, I would like to know exactly how many terrorist acts were prevented by the Administration learning what we read and who I call.
???? Some of these actions appear to fly in the face of the law of the land.? The Administrations' response?? The President has the inherent power to order these actions in a time of war.? In other words, this President has a right to defy the law of the land, when he determines it is in our best interest. Trust him.
???? I do not.? This is the same Administration that never told us before the war started what the plan was and what the commitment would be.? Did they do this out of evil intent?? Maybe not.? But they have lost my trust, and hopefully the trust of millions of Americans.
??? That is not all.
???? As unbelievable as it may seem, we are further cutting taxes, in this time of war and deficit.? It is a fact that these cuts benefit mostly the wealthy.? The excuse the Administration gives is that these tax cuts are needed to stimulate the economy.? Yet the Federal Reserve has increased interest rates since June, 2004 in order to control economic growth to control inflation.? The upper class gets major tax cuts while the rest of us get enough to fill our car up, once, if we are lucky.? Our children and grandchildren will finance this Administrations additions to the deficit and the entire war on Iraq. Where is the Republican fiscal conservatism?
??? Enough already.? If there are crimes that were committed by George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and their friends, let us bring them to justice.? If?we cannot do that because of his presidential power, then Bush should be impeached.? If there are no crimes or impeachable offenses, then let the voters, Republican and Democrat alike run these very dangerous rascals out of office.
???? Al-Qaeda wins when, because of fear, we lose our civil liberties.?? This Administration took advantage of the events of September 11, 2001 by stoking our fears to foster its own agenda.? We need to fight terrorism by Determination, Brain Power, Manpower, Funding, Technology and Intelligence and by cherishing and respecting the Constitution and protecting our rights and civil liberties.? We only foster the aims of terrorism when we allow ourselves to forget what a great, strong and potentially united a Nation we are.? We have to fight terror with all our might.? We should never agree to fight it by allowing our leaders to frighten us into submitting to our own form of dictatorship, where our leaders make up the law as they go along.?My email address has changed to duby@bellsouth.net.

Sony NEX firmware 03 first impressions
Sony's announcement of revised firmware for the NEX mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras was easily missed amongst all of the excitement of Photokina 2010. Version 03 brings extensive revisions, including the ability to set the aperture when recording movies and the enabling of autofocus when using SAM and SSM Alpha-mount lenses via the adapter. But, perhaps most importantly, it addresses some of the major criticisms of the user interface made by reviewers and users alike. We've had a bit of a chance to use the latest firmware so thought we would publish our initial thoughts, ahead of revising the camera review. The review itself is in the process of being updated and will be re-published with updated scoring as soon as firmware 03 becomes publicly available.
The first thing to be done is to congratulate Sony for being willing to accept that its product could be improved and make such wide-ranging and significant changes (which isn't a simple or common undertaking for a company of Sony's size). Having shot with the latest firmware for over a week, it's apparent that the company has listened closely to what users and reviewers have been saying, and has corrected many of the camera's shortcomings.
The NEX cameras are primarily aimed at users wanting DSLR image quality but point-and-shoot ease-of-use and, for that audience, the latest firmware makes no real difference. The tendency of the cameras to overexpose slightly in iAuto mode remains, as does the limitation of only being able to use up to ISO 1600 along with the inability to use the multi-shot noise reduction and high dynamic range modes. It's a shame to see that the Auto+ mode from the more recent SLT cameras (that automatically uses multi-shot modes if necessary), hasn't been introduced. With all that said, however, it wasn't the iAuto mode we found particularly problematic - it was the more user-controlled PASM modes.
The PASM modes of the NEX could be hugely frustrating to use. Most reviews (and many user comments), highlighted the manifold problems with the user interface when used in the PASM modes - the difference between the final conclusions were often a matter of how willing the reviewer or user was to overlook the flaws. So it's great to be able to say that the majority of drawbacks have been successfully addressed.
The biggest problem previously was that setting anything more involved than exposure compensation (including basic features such as ISO and white balance) required delving into the NEX's heavily partitioned menu system. This has been resolved with the ability to customize two of the soft-buttons on the back of the camera. The difference this makes is remarkable - choose your settings carefully and it's very rare for you to have to enter the menu system, instantly improving the user experience significantly.

The lower button is called soft key B and the central one is soft key C.

You can't, however, use it to switch from autofocus to manual or between JPEG and RAW.

Switching it to 'Custom' has the advantage that the virtual mode dial is always a consistent number of steps away.

There's also a 'Not Set' option that means you only need to cycle through the options you actually want while shooting.

Again this reduces the amount of time you have to spend navigating menus, reducing distractions from shooting.

There's also no option to switch from RAW to JPEG, so you can still be confronted by error messages if you want to shoot an HDR image.
There are a couple of omissions that may affect some users, depending on their shooting habits (anyone how likes to focus and recompose is likely to be disappointed that they can't lock exposure or focus independently), but for most keen photographers the experience is likely to be a great improvement. Providing easy access to settings such as ISO immediately reduces the need to use the menu system, meaning fewer distractions from the business of shooting.
On the subject of the menus, two small changes have been made that make them slightly more pleasant to use: the first is that they now loop from the last item to the first or vice versa (so it's much quicker to get to options at the bottom of a menu). This in itself is a nice change but it's improved still further by a new setting to remember the last option you used in each section of the menu, and use that as the start point for navigation in that section. Again this small change makes a big difference - it means you don't have to hunt for the settings you change most often.

The final change to the user interface brought by Firmware 03 is a revision to manual focus assist (magnified live view). It's another change that makes the shooting experience faster and less intrusive. The latest firmware remembers where you'd chosen to zoom in and will revert to that point next time it's engaged. This means, if you're using manual focus lenses on the NEX, you can focus on, for instance, your subject's eye and be sure that you can do the same again a moment later, rather than having to reposition your magnified area first (while your model gets bored).

It's a small change but one that makes fine focusing much, much faster when trying to focus on an off-center point. For instance it's now much quicker to confirm and fine-tune focus if you want to take more than one portrait shot (you don't have to expect your subject to wait as you re-position the magnified portion).
Throughout our review we tried to make clear how impressed we were with the physical design of the NEX cameras (particularly the NEX-5) and with the image quality, which is very good indeed (and not just 'for a camera of that size'). However, we found the user interface interfered enough when shooting that it became an interruption to the photographic experience to an extent that was inexcusable. However, this update addresses the vast majority of our concerns, to the point that we would now quite happily recommend the NEX cameras to enthusiast users. The update doesn't suddenly make everything perfect but it does leave them no more flawed than their competitors.
We said at the time that we didn't think many changes were required to make the NEX significantly better and this update proves that point perfectly. Firmware 03 changes the status of the PASM modes from feeling like an afterthought to being a well-thought-out and integrated shooting method. This firmware update hasn't just been rushed-out to address criticisms - it's seems very carefully considered. Overall, its fair to say that the update recasts the NEXs from being potentially good cameras let down by bizarre user interface design to being two of the best mirrorless models you can buy (particularly for enthusiast users). The review and scoring will be updated to reflect this as soon as the firmware becomes publicly available.
After extended use by several people in the office, these would be our suggested settings. Obviously the exact option you chose will depend on your shooting style and needs but we believe most enthusiast photographers will find these a good place to start:
Soft Key B (lower button)? MF Assist. Because the lower button reverts back to area selection in AF area selection mode, we'd suggest MF Assist, rather than ISO, since it's impossible to need MF Assist and AF area selection at the same time.Soft Key C (center button)? ISO is pretty much essential, since it gives you direct control over sensitivity and allows easy access to the settings above 1600 that Auto ISO won't use.Beyond that, although there are seven other options, we found ourselves mainly using two of the following three:
? White Balance
? Autofocus Area (for easy switching to an off-center AF point, given the previously mentioned drawbacks of focusing and recomposing)
? DRO/Auto HDR (the full capabilities of these modes are only available when shooting JPEG only, but they're nice features to be able to control and have easy access to).
Because our biggest criticisms of the NEX cameras were based on their user interface, that has been the focus of our time spent with the camera so far. These improvements aren't the only changes that have been made. There's also the ability to preset the aperture for movie shooting - whichever aperture you've selected in M or A mode, or via iAuto mode's defocus control system is maintained during shooting (though can't be adjusted).
Although not technically part of Firmware 03 (it's a separate firmware update for the LA-EA1 Alpha mount lens adapter), Sony has also unlocked the ability of the adapter to autofocus Alpha-mount lenses with built-in autofocus motors (those with the SSM and SAM designation). We'll be writing more about this when we've had a chance to test with a wider range of lenses.

HDR Efex Pro brings innovative and best-in-class technologies to HDR photography. Panasonic to ship AG-AF100 from December
Panasonic has announced its AG-AF100 series professional Micro Four Thirds HD camcorder will be available from December 27 at a suggested retail price of $4995. Announced in May 2010, the camcorder is capable of recording full 1080p HD videos at frame rates from 12 to 60 fps. It includes HD SDI and XLR connectors, twin SDXC slots and is compatible with the company's line up of Lumix G lenses, filters and adapters.
Press Release:

Best-in-Class 4/3” Sensor Delivers Depth of Field and Field of View Similar to that of 35mm Movie Camera; Camcorder Uses Low-Cost Still Camera and Film-Style Lenses
SECAUCUS, N.J.—Panasonic Solutions Company today announced that the AG-AF100, the industry’s first professional micro 4/3-inch video camcorder optimized for high-definition video recording, will start shipping on December 27th at a suggested list price of $4,995. Highly anticipated since its introduction at NAB earlier this year, the AF100 is poised to set new benchmarks in digital cinematography.
Targeted at the video and film production communities, the AF100 delivers the shallow depth of field and wider field of view of a large imager, with the flexibility and cost advantages of a growing line of professional quality, industry-standard micro 4/3-inch lenses, filters, and adapters. The full HD 1080 and 720 production camera offers superior video handling, native 1080/24p recording, variable frame rates, professional audio capabilities, and compatibility with SDHC and SDXC media.
“The design of the AF100’s best-in-class 4/3-inch sensor affords depth of field and field of view similar to that of 35mm movie cameras in a more affordable camera body,” said Jan Crittenden Livingston, Product Line Business Manager, Panasonic Solutions Company. “What’s more, Panasonic engineering ingenuity has resolved the aliasing and moiré that has haunted the DSLR shooter. Indeed, the proof of concept of the AF100 was based on what we heard from and saw customers doing: purchasing DSLR cameras because they liked the look of the image, but then agonized over all of the workarounds required to come out with an acceptable high definition recording.”
The AF100 incorporates a large 4/3-inch,16:9 MOS imager that minimizes skew with fast imager scanning, and incorporates low pass filters for elimination of aliasing and moiré. Additionally, it has a built-in optical ND filter. The camcorder records 1080 at 60i, 50i, 30P, 25P (Native) and 24P (Native), and 720 at 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p and 24p native,in AVCHD’s highest-quality PH mode (maximum 24Mbps). The AF100 also records in AVCCAM’s HA (17 Mbps) and HE (6Mbps) modes, 1080i only. Ready for global production standards, the camcorder is 60Hz and 50Hz switchable. Equipped with an interchangeable micro 4/3-inch lens mount, the AF100 can utilize an array of low-cost, widely-available still camera lenses as well as film-style lenses with fixed focal lengths and primes.
Variable frame rates are available in 1080p, selectable in 20 steps from 12p to 60p at 60Hz and 20 steps from 12p to 50p at 50Hz. Standard professional interfaces include uncompressed 4:2:2, 8 Bit HD-SDI out; HDMI out; and USB 2.0. It records SMPTE timecode and is able to perform timecode synchronizing via the video output seeing timecode in. It has a built-in stereo microphone and features two mic/line, switchable XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power capability. The camera can record 48-kHz/16-bit two-channel digital audio recording (in PH mode only) and supports LPCM/Dolby-AC3 in any of the modes.
This newest Panasonic AVCCAM camcorder is the first to enjoy the benefits of advanced SDXC media card compatibility in addition to existing SDHC card support. SDXC is the newest SD memory card specification that supports memory capacities above 32GB and up to 2TB. With two SD slots for continuous recording, the AF100 can record up to 12 hours on two 64GB SDXC cards in PH mode, with automatic clip spanning across the two cards.
Weighing only 3.5 pounds (without lens or battery), the AF100 is packed with high-end features including Dynamic Range Stretch in all modes and frame rates; six built-in, customizable scene files that are exchangeable for quick and easy matching between multiple cameras; seven built-in gamma curves with four selectable color matrices; Syncro-scan shutter; and a high-resolution LCD and viewfinder.
It also offers a focus assist that can be used while recording, which is color-on peaking and a focus bar; two sets of adjustable zebras; two manual black and white balance choices, and preset White Balance at 3200K, 5600K or variable; a waveform monitor and vectorscope for more accurate monitoring of broadcast safe levels. Other essential features include pre-record; an intervalometer function that can be set for up to 24 hours, programmable User Buttons; a Smart Battery interface for recording up to four hours with a 5400mA battery; metadata recording; and a wireless infrared remote controller.
Panasonic will support the AF100 with a three-year limited warranty (one year plus two extra years upon registration).

Just posted: Our Panasonic GH2/14mm F2.5 samples gallery. Panasonic's latest video-focused Micro Four Thirds camera features an entirely new 18MP multi-aspect-ratio sensor and has been released alongside a 14mm F2.5 pancake lens. DxO Labs discusses DxO Optics Pro v6.5
DxO Labs has announced version 6.5 of its DxO Optics Pro Raw conversion software. A few days before the announcement, we got a chance to speak to the company's Sales and Marketing Director for Photography, Cyrille de La Chesnais. He highlighted the new and improved features the latest version has to offer, along with key elements of the company's new HDR plug-in that will be available around the same time as the Raw conversion software.
'Similar to previous versions, users will benefit from 100% improvement in the default or automatic image processing,' says Cyrille de La Chesnais. 'Many users do not attempt to manually fine-tune Raw images. Our goal was to deliver maximum results when users use our automatic processing option. This is how we aim to differ from other solutions in the market. Because we've calibrated the sensor in our labs we are able to set the optimal default position - rather than using the same settings for all sensors and all ISOs. There's an element of taste to this, of course, but our defaults is set to the middle of the gaussian distribution, so we believe it will please most people. In most cases you do not have to move any sliders at all.'

DxO Optics v6.5 - Customize
With respect to the new Single Shot HDR feature he says, 'We have revamped the DxO Lighting technology. DxO lighting corrects for shadows and backlighting automatically. If you push that further you get an HDR-style effect and open up the shadows but this reveals more noise. To allow you to do this, we've improved our raw conversion - removing low frequency (blotchy) color noise and giving more control for noise/detail discrimination, delivering realistic looking HDR effect even in single images.'
One of the key bug-fixes in the latest version is that for support issues with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3. 'The compatibility issues have now been fixed and users will be able to use DxO Optics Pro as an external editor to Lightroom 3, or browse Lightroom catalogs and write back images into Lightroom like before.', he says. 'Several minor bugs have also been fixed based on our user feedback. We've also re-written some of the algorithms to improve speed resulting in around a 25% improvement in user interface responsiveness and 20-25% improvements in processing speed.'

DxO Optics v6.5 - Process
Stressing on the company's efforts to broaden the cameras and lenses support he adds, 'The number one request from customers is support for their specific camera / lens combination. For this, we are continually trying to increase our pace. The goal is to reach 600 modules per quarter and achieve 5000 modules by the end of 2011. We won’t cover 100% of the user base – there will always be esoteric and old lenses but we work on the 20:80 rule [that 20% of all lenses account for 80% of all lens use]. We’ve improved our calibration process and taken on additional staff to help us towards this target.' Version 6.5 extends Raw support to five additional cameras, including the Canon EOS 60D, Pentax K-x and Sony Alpha DSLR-A290, and comes with 150 new DxO optical modules. He also mentions that a minor update will follow to support Nikon D7000, Nikon D3100 and Sony A390 Raw files.
DxO Labs has also announced the DxO HDR plug-in for multiple RAW image processing. Explaining the technology he says, 'The tone mapping technology is based on DxO lighting technology. To give realistic, halo-less results. Combining three images brings less noise and greater tonality. It allows you to go one step further than what’s possible with noise reduction and it’s only the beginning of what’s possible. The great news is that users can edit images for white balance, tone-mapping, noise removal etc within the plug-in for minimum data loss, while leveraging from DxO Optics Pro RAW conversion and automatic optical faults corrections for optimal image quality.'
Commenting on the plug-in's compatibility with third-party image-editing programs he says, 'During launch, the plug-in will be compatible only with DxO Optics Pro v6.5. We may extend support to Photoshop CS5 and other software in future.' He further adds, 'Our original plan was to incorporate the HDR plug-in with the rest of the improvements we have made and call it version 7. But version 7 would be a payable upgrade and much of the multi-shot HDR upgrades may not have been of interest for 100% of our customers. We felt it was fairer to make it optional and provide all the other improvements for free to our existing customer base.'
